Biography
David Fischer grew up watching his mother take photographs. It was her influence and guidance that prompted him to begin his study of photography at an early age. In 1989 he took his studies to Rochester Institute of Technology where he began to diverge from traditional photography by physically cutting up, scratching and drawing on negatives. While learning the skills of commercial photography, he also took many classes in digital retouching. Once David learned Photoshop it opened up a new world of freedom to manipulate images and begin his journey as a digital collage artist. He then received his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design where he focused primarily on photographic digital manipulation. He began to develop his own visual style while enjoying the process of piecing together images into cohesive surreal landscapes. As a student he began working in SCAD's web development department as a web designer. After a short time, he became the Art Director for SCAD's web department overseeing the design of the college's website and production. David then fell in love with the culture and opportunities for digital retouching in Los Angeles where he is currently working as a freelance retoucher/compositor.

Artist Statement

They say that your eyes are a mirror to your soul. Though a true window into the inner workings of a mind is more likely to be exposed through art. An artist makes a number of choices and these choices whether intentional or not, reflect the psyche of the creator. My needs, desires, fears etc. are reflected in my creations.

My art helps me explore the underlying layer of the subconscious. Like dreams, I feel that art holds the key to a person’s psyche. By examining the process of creating art and of course the final creation, a greater understanding of the artist is achieved. Through this interaction and exploration, a personal dialog begins.

I assemble images to understand and effect the process of my own mental growth. While studying my issues symbolically, I came across a lot of unresolved emotional debris. I felt that if I could bring order to this chaos I may be able to construct a visual resolve to an psychological issue. I attempt to alter my perception of events and/or people to discover new avenues of thought. I try to bring joy to unexpected places and to find humor in the absurd. The objective is to magnify positive memories and to flesh out, expose and learn from any skeletons that clutter my brain.
